3 Ways Ahsoka Is Retconning Star Wars Rebels' Ending

A new image recreating the epilogue from Rebels retcons three things that may be clues for what’s to come in Ahsoka’s Disney+ show.

The Ahsoka Disney+ TV show is expected to recreate the ending of Star Wars Rebels, but it's already clear there will be some retcons. The heroes of Star Wars Rebels are coming to live-action at last in the Ahsoka Disney+ TV show, will essentially feels like a continuation of the animated series. Rosario Dawson stars as Ahsoka Tano, accompanied by Natasha Liu Bordizzo's Sabine Wren and Elizabeth Winstead's Hera Syndulla.

Empire Magazine recently released an exclusive image in which Ahsoka stars recreated Rebels' epilogue, which saw Ahsoka Tano recruit Sabine Wren on the quest to find their long-lost friend Ezra Bridger (to be played by Eman Esfandi in live-action). Although it's thrilling to see this scene recreated, viewers will notice some important differences - which may serve as clues to the overall plot. Here are all the important retcons.

Star Wars Rebels' epilogue introduced a new incarnation of Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker's former Padawan. She now wore a beautiful white cloak and carried a staff, and Lucasfilm's Dave Filoni described Ahsoka as Star Wars' Gandalf - having transitioned from Ahsoka the Gray to Ahsoka the White.

The cosmic energy shimmering around Ahsoka in Star Wars Rebels' epilogue suggested this was far more than a mere change in clothing. The look was notably absent from Rosario Dawson's live-action debut as Ahsoka in The Mandalorian season 2, and cannot be seen in the Rebels epilogue recreation. Ahsoka is back in gray.

It's unclear why the cloak color has changed, but this is most likely for story purposes. Rather than having already become Ahsoka the White, it's likely Ahsoka is actually on the journey of transformation. Viewers get to experience it with her, coming to understand Ahsoa in a new way.

That's a much smarter narrative approach. It is, of course, impossible to say whether Ahsoka will actually be transformed in this Disney+ TV show, or whether that is being saved for a future story - perhaps even in Dave Filoni's upcoming movie set in The Mandalorian era.

When Ezra Bridger went to confront Grand Admiral Thrawn on his flagship, the Chimaera, he gave his lightsaber to the Ghost crew’s astromech droid, Chopper. Sabine Wren came into possession of the lightsaber after using it to escape the Imperial installation on Lothal.

She was previously trained to use a lightsaber when she was the owner of the Darksaber, learning under both Ezra and Kanan Jarrus. In the photo from Ahsoka, Sabine can be seen with Ezra’s lightsaber hanging from her belt.

An extended trailer shown at Star Wars Celebration 2023 featured Sabine wielding the lightsaber, so having it on her hip isn’t just for show - she can and will use Ezra's weapon in combat. Sabine having Ezra’s lightsaber was another element that wasn’t in the Rebels epilogue, though this retcon may be for the best.

Ahsoka and Sabine know they’re likely up against Imperial Remnants and Grand Admiral Thrawn himself, so the Mandalorian warrior being better armed with a weapon that can later be returned to its owner will prove beneficial in their conflict.

Does Sabine's Hairstyle Match Rebels' Ending - Or Is The Show Taking Another Approach?

Throughout Rebels, Sabine donned a shorter, above shoulder-length hairstyle, but the epilogue of the show depicted her with a cropped pixie cut, an indication of the passage of time and personal change.

However, in the trailer footage for Ahsoka, Sabine can be seen with long hair, a style that had previously never been seen from her before. There's been speculation that the Rebels epilogue may be featured halfway through Ahsoka, with Sabine's hairstyles marking different phases of the show.

While translating animated characters to live-action always comes with some wiggle room, it appears that Star Wars is retconning a few things when recreating the Rebels epilogue in order for them to better fit into Ahsoka.

Ahsoka's cloak and Sabine's hair aren't direct matches to their animated counterparts, changes that could be stylistic or part of the story. While it’s not known what, if any, impact these retcons will have on the larger context of the Ahsoka show, it does better contextualize the epilogue of Rebels for live-action.
