With the American Revolution finally in full swing, Jamie and Claire find themselves facing difficult choices.
Jamie and Claire Outlander Season 7
Much to the delight of Outlander fans, the penultimate season of the STARZ series returns next month with a supersized 16-episode season. The newest trailer was recently released, and it’s packed with clues as to how the upcoming season will unfold.
Since arriving in the colonies at the end of the finale of season 3, Claire (Caitríona Balfe) has been warning Jamie (Sam Heughan) of the impending revolution. There have been drips and drabs as to what is yet to come, but now the war is in full swing, and Jamie and Claire appear to be in the middle of it all.
The trailer opens with Claire attending what looks to be a funeral, although there’s no indication as to who the procession is for. It should be noted that Jamie, Bree (Sophie Skelton), and Roger (Richard Rankin) are nowhere to be seen, which could be a hint as to the context of the scene. As the trailer unfolds, scenes of war are prevalent, a fire at the Fraser homestead seems apparent, and the inner turmoil Jamie faces amid a war rise to the surface. If the trailer is any indication, the upcoming season of Outlander will be a jammed packed one.

Escaping the Gallows
Outlander Claire at Gallows
In what felt reminiscent of the show’s earliest seasons, viewers last saw Claire dramatically separated from Jamie as the pair reluctantly traveled to Wilmington with Richard Brown’s (Chris Larkin) Committee of Safety. Although, by now, it should be obvious Claire’s fate won’t be at the end of a rope.
Seeing as she’s shown in multiple scenes throughout the trailer, it’s clear she survives the witch hunt she endured in the wake of Malva Christie’s (Jessica Reynolds) murder. How she manages to successfully evade the gallows is the real question the upcoming season of Outlander will need to answer.
Scenes of the Revolution are littered throughout the trailer, and images of Jamie’s participation are reminiscent of his involvement at the Battle of Culloden. As Claire states in the trailer, despite her efforts to keep him away from the war, maybe he’s meant to be there after all.
As scenes of war progress throughout the trailer, Jamie and Claire are clearly fulfilling the same roles they had in previous seasons. He is a warrior while she is a healer, and their skills are most definitely utilized in the newest revolution they face.
However, despite knowing the outcome of the American Revolution, there’s still a risk in fighting. Jamie isn’t immune from death as they face what’s to come, and an extravagant battle is likely on the horizon for him and his loved ones. In fact, the final shot of the trailer shows Jamie lying unconscious on the battlefield. While it’s unlikely his story will end there, only time will tell.
As the trailer continues, viewers can clearly see Jamie’s son, William (Charles Vandervaart), is now grown and an officer in the British Army. Unfortunately, Jamie is on the opposite side and will likely come face-to-face with William on the battlefield.
Although Jamie discusses the promise he made to never face his son “across the barrel of a gun,” the circumstances surrounding the upcoming season might render his efforts futile. Despite his vow, the trailer indicates his efforts to prevent such an event might be in vain, ultimately leaving Jamie with difficult choices as the season progresses.
Audiences will remember back in season 4 when Bree’s journey down the rabbit hole to the past was prompted after discovering a newspaper article discussing the deaths of Jamie and Claire in a house fire.
However, the exact date of the incident was smudged, meaning the fire could take place at any time during the 1770s. Because of this, the knowledge of their deaths has loomed over them since she arrived in the past. Unfortunately, it seems as though such fears will inevitably come to fruition, as it’s clear the fire will be a major incident in Outlander’s upcoming season.
As the trailer progresses, Claire can be seen telling someone off-camera to “get the hell out of my house,” just before the person, who appears to be in shackles, strikes a match and lets it fall to the ground inside her home, presumably setting the house ablaze.
While the identity of the perpetrator is purposely hidden from the viewer, it could be presumed the shackled hands belong to Wendigo Donner (Brennan Martin), the prisoner, and fellow traveler, who was in the cell adjacent to Claire at the end of season 6.
The identity of the mystery arsonist and how Jamie, Claire, and the rest of those living at Fraser’s Ridge proceed in the wake of the arsonist’s destruction will surely test each character as the newest season develops.
Keen-eyed watchers of the trailer will have noticed something strange toward the end. As a montage of clips are shown as the trailer wraps, the back of someone wearing a hard hat can be seen running down a tunnel clearly lined with electric lights. It’s hard to tell whether the mystery person is male or female, but given it’s the only scene that involves something from the future, it must be significant.
Furthermore, the previous teaser trailer for the upcoming season included a voiceover of Jamie telling Claire about a dream he had of her surrounded by what he believed to be electric lights. The initial teaser coupled with this particular shot can’t be a coincidence, meaning someone might be traveling back to the future this season.
The seventh season of Outlander is slated to return on June 16. Until then, viewers can watch the show’s previous six seasons on demand or streaming via STARZ.
