From well-known names like Jean Grey and Apocalypse to lesser-known X-Men characters, here are 10 upcoming mutants who can defeat MCU Scarlet Witch.
Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch is arguably the most powerful MCU character as of Phase 5, but several upcoming Marvel mutants could be stronger than Wanda.
When Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff debuted in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel Studios could not use or reference Marvel mutants lore. As a result, Wanda was never a mutant in the MCU. However, with mutants now joining the MCU, Wanda’s backstory could perhaps be retconned again.
WandaVision retconned Wanda’s powers, making the MCU’s Scarlet Witch closer to her comic book counterpart. Instead of being a product of the Mind Stone, the Scarlet Witch was a manifestation of Wanda’s natural powers.
As such, it has never been easier for the MCU to retcon Scarlet Witch as a mutant. Even if that does not happen, Wanda’s story will always be tied to the X-Men on some level – she fought Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, for example. Here are 10 Marvel mutants more powerful than Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch who could soon join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
10 Magneto
Whenever Magento shows up in the MCU, the franchise will have the chance to retconning Wanda and Pietro’s story and finally make Scarlet Witch a mutant. Regardless of whether Wanda and Pietro could still be Magneto’s children in the MCU, Magneto’s arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will shift the franchise’s power scale.
Magneto is an Omega-level mutant and one of the most powerful characters in the X-Men universe. Erich Lansher’s ability to manipulate magnetic fields makes him a living weapon, one that can begin and end battles in the blink of an eye. While comic book Wanda is stronger than Magneto, the MCU’s Magneto could be as powerful as Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch.
9 Storm
Ororo Munroe, the Omega-level mutant known as Storm, is among the most powerful Marvel characters to have been part of the X-Men. While Storm only joined the X-Men after the original team disappeared in the original Marvel Comics, Ororo has since become a pillar of the X-Men universe and will likely be in the MCU’s X-Men team.
The Fox X-Men movies failed at showcasing Storm’s true powers, limiting the character’s skills to throwing lightning bolts and levitating. In the comics, Storm has god-like powers that, if properly portrayed in the MCU, would make her as powerful as Scarlet With, if not more.
8 Proteus
Although characters like Magneto and Storm can beat MCU's Wanda in a fight, Scarlet Witch's powers in the comics can only be compared to a handful of other Marvel characters. That short list includes Kevin MacTaggert, also known as Proteus, an energy-hungry mutant whose body cannot contain the amount of power he has.
Proteus can absorb and manipulate energy, which led to his original body being destroyed. Proteus was so powerful that he had to be hidden from the world by his mother, Moira MacTaggert. Proteus’ inability to keep his body intact makes him a threat, as he has to take over other peoples’ bodies to remain alive.
In addition to his energy-based abilities, Proteus can also manipulate reality itself. Similar to how the MCU’s Scarlet Witch combines the Mind Stone and pure magic to reshape reality, Proteus can use his ability to manipulate energy to reshape the universe at his will.
Whether Proteus will appear in the MCU remains to be seen, although Moira MacTaggert is an essential Marvel character in a lot of key X-Men comic book stories that are yet to be adapted as a movie.
7 Apocalypse
En Sabah Nur, Marvel’s Apocalypse, is among the most powerful villains the X-Men ever faced. While Apocapypse’s powers are not as complex to decipher as other abilities mentioned on this list, En Sabah Nur is a great example of how much a mutant can evolve.
From displaying his mutant abilities for the first time in ancient Egypt to creating a new reality in Age of Apocalypse, Apocalypse accumulated powers and shaped himself as the ultimate mutant weapon. FOX’s X-Men: Apocalypse barely scratched the potential of En Sabah Nur, who could now join the MCU and be portrayed as being as powerful as Thanos or Scarlet Witch, if not more.
6 Hope Summers
As complicated as the X-Men movie timeline was, the X-Men’s timeline in Marvel Comics is even more confusing. Hope Summers, whose backstory is more complicated to follow than anything in the MCU timeline, is an example.
Still, if the MCU ever adapts Hope Summers into live-action, she would challenge Scarlet Witch as the most powerful mutant, or mutant-ish, character in the franchise. Hope Summers can copy any abilities of any mutants and use those abilities as well as the original mutants. Hope Summers’ powers are far more effective than Rogue’s, meaning that her full potential as an Omega-level mutant is unlimited.
5 Nate Grey
If the MCU’s X-Men movie reboots want to use a villain that the Fox X-Men films never used, Mister Sinister would be a great choice. Mister Sinister in the MCU could lead the introduction of Nathaniel Grey, a mutant created by Mister Sinister in the Age of Apocalypse timeline using genetic material from Jean Grey and Scott Summers.
In his original timeline, Nate Grey was considered the most powerful psionic mutant and perhaps the most powerful mutant in general. While Nate Grey’s backstory may be a bit complicated for an initial MCU X-Men story, the character would surely rival Scarlet Witch for the title of strongest Marvel character.
4 Mister M
Absolon Mercator, Marvel’s Mister M, has the unlimited ability to manipulate matter at his will. Therefore, there is basically nothing Mister M cannot do or create. This Omega-level mutant can transform anything into whatever he wants, plus he can obliterate entire locations as easily as he can destroy people.
Despite his absurd power, Mister M does not have a very long history in Marvel Comics. If the MCU wants to explore relatively unknown mutant characters that the Fox X-Men movies never did, Mister M is a solid choice. Absolon Mercator would change the MCU’s power levels, as he is arguably more powerful than Scarlet Witch.
3 Legion
Scarlet Witch’s reality-bending powers from WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are nothing compared to what Legion, one of Marvel’s most powerful characters, can do. It is almost difficult to list Legion’s powers, as David Haller is very much an omnipotent character.
As a result of David Haller’s dissociative identity disorder, Legion has countless alters, each of whom has a different set of powers. How Legion’s powers are portrayed depends on the writer and the artist, although FX’s Legion TV show did an incredible job at translating David Haller’s abilities to live-action. If Legion ever joins the MCU, he could defeat Scarlet Witch.
2 Franklin Richards
Although Franklin Richards is no longer a mutant in Marvel Comics, his mutant background could easily be incorporated into the MCU whenever Reed Richards and Sue Storm’s son join the franchise. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness confirmed that Franklin Richards exists on the MCU's Earth-838, meaning that he could appearin the movies sooner rather than later.
Franklin Richards’ reality-bending abilities made him one of the most beings in the Marvel universe, if not the most. Franklin Richards was omnipotent at some point, although his powers did not last forever. At the height of his powers, comic book Franklin Richards was much stronger than the MCU’s Scarlet Witch ever was.
1 Jean Grey
Power systems aside, Jean Grey might be the only X-Men character who can narratively match Scarlet Witch’s importance to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course, Jean is also one of the most powerful mutants in Marvel Comics, which would surely be translated into the MCU.
When considering the Pheonix Force, a battle between Jean Grey and Scarlet Witch could go either way. There are several parallels between Jean and Wanda in the comics, and the MCU’s Wanda was heavily inspired by Jean Grey in her early appearances. Regardless of whether Scarlet Witch will ever be a mutant in the MCU, a Wanda and Jean crossover is a must.
